Hisyam digantikan oleh keponakannya al-Walid bin Yazid bin Abdul Malik 709-744 yang dikenal dengan julukan al-Walid II untuk membedakannya dengan Khalifah al-Walid bin Abdul Malik 668-715. Yazid merupakan satu-satunya khalifah yang berasal dari Bani Umayyah dari pihak ayah dan ibu.
